Wandelweekend 19th-20th May 2018
Continental Centurions qualifying race 2018
Schiedam, the Netherlands.
Once again. the Rotterdam Walking Club, RWV, hosted the annual Continental Centurions Qualifying Race in Princess Beatrix Park, Schiedam on the outskirts of Rotterdam. (It alternates with Weert - the 2019 venue)
An innovation this year was the chip timing and on-line tracking which was very useful for those of us stuck at home!
As ever, the Wandelweekend comprises of several events: a 24 hour race; 100 mile race (those completing 100 miles in 24 hours become Continental Centurions); 100km race; 50 miles and 50km races.
On entering the race, athletes elect whether they are competing in the 24 hours or 100 miles. But it has to be said that the results don't often reflect this....
Richard McChesney (pictured below) was the first man home in the 24 hour race with Captain Martin Fisher in 3rd places.
In his Facebook post, Richard said:
"This weekend I finished my 20th walk of 100 miles or more when I competed in the Continental Centurions race in Schiedam, Holland.
This is an important race on the annual calendar and attracts some top class race-walkers.
I'm happy to report that I finished the 100 mile Centurion event in 3rd place in a new PB and NZ record of 20 hours 44 minutes 11 seconds.
I then continued through to 24 hours and finished with a new 24 hour PB/NZ record of 184.55km."
Note: Richard came 5th in the Dijon 24 hours just four weeks ago!
