Centenary

President's Page > President's Letter December 2008

Dear Centurion,

Another year passes and another year nearer to our Centenary.

 Centenary Celebration weekend

The Centenary of the Centurions 1911 is a one off.  It is hoped that all existing Centurions will make an effort to be involved in some way and support the Brotherhood.

We are planning a weekend provisionally in May 2011 to include a tour of London, a dinner at a prestigious venue on the Friday or Saturday evening with a speaker(s) of note.

But we need YOUR input. Please see enclosed sheet, (below) please fill in and return to the Hon. Secretary, Chris Flint, as soon as possible. We need to have a fairly good estimate of those that wish to attend. His address is:
Glenthorne, 65 Liverpool Road, Walmer, Kent CT14 7NN.
Email:  flintc@scr-ltd.co.uk

Centenary Book

We also need your input into putting together a Centenary book.  Do you have any anecdotes, stories, photos, etc regarding Centurions or Centurion events.  Please contact me on SBorinoco@aol.com or any of the Committee with details or if you require further information.

The last year has seen some good performances from our Centurions at home and abroad and once again the outstanding performance emanated from Sandra Brown C735 in winning, against all opposition, the RWV Wandeweekend 100miles, and following that with the St. Thibault 24hr. In between there was the Milton Keynes 100 in which she came overall 4th.  Commiserations go to Kevin Marshall C 1001 on his first attempt at the Paris Colmar race which was unsuccessful and a disappointment to him after all the effort that went into it, but all credit to getting the qualification in the first place and for a fighting attempt.

Our Dutch colleagues always give us support at our home meetings, and this year was no exception with their squad at the 100 at Milton Keynes. It is unfortunate that we are unable to return the support at their events in the numbers they provide. The Milton Keynes 100 held, thanks to the excellent work put in by Mark Wall, Sue Rey and the Milton Keynes Club was held in August. There was a good turn out by Centurions, and a full report can be found on the Centurions web site. It was a good weekend despite a two hour down pour in the early hours of Sunday morning which seems to blight most of the recent British 100’s.

The event provided five new Centurions, 2 Dutch and 3 British.  Ian Richards C.1064 made his debut in style finishing 3rd and special mention is made of Bob Austin C.1066 and also  Sean Pender C.1067 who at 18 hours was on ¾ distance so had to keep at the same pace to qualify, in fact he “speeded up” to end up with nearly 4 minutes to spare.

At this time of the year we remember those Centurions who have passed away during the past year and we remember them all as great competitors.  It is with great sadness that Dave Green, husband of Jill Green C.898, died recently.  He was for many years her rock and mentor, and news of the sudden death of Jerry Everett C.951, aged 57 years, following heart surgery is a great shock.

Next year is the Bi-Centenary of the Captain Barclay walk and to commemorate this historic event  Ron Wallwork C.893 is organising a weekend of walks including the 100 on 11th-12th. July at Newmarket. It is hoped that as many Centurions as possible will be able to attend and give support, either vocal or with any form of help in officiating, helping on the course, manning feeding stations, and recording. All help is needed.  These events do not just happen.

My thanks to all the hard work put in over the year by our Secretary Chris Flint C849,  Captain Charlie Weston C584, Sue Clements C950 and Kathy Crilley C933 for her work on the web site.

And so at 2 pm on Christmas day wherever you may be please raise a glass and toast ‘The Centurions’.

Best wishes to you all

Carl Lawton
C750 President
