Dutch Centurions
AGM 28th November 2009 Muiden
Secretary Chris Flint, Assistant Secretary/web
master Kathy Crilley, Vice-Presidents Sandra
Brown and Jill Green made the long journey to
Muiden (just east of Amsterdam) to join the
Dutch Centurions in their annual reunion meal...
The meal was precede
by a tour of the magnificent castle - Muidenslot.
Whilst the day was billed as an "AGM" no
business was conducted other than to salute all
Centurions present and our own small ceremony of
presenting the trophies and certificates to the
new Centurions.
Although we were on the road for a total of over
8 hours, it was well worth the effort. We were
made very welcome and it was a real pleasure to
meet up with old friends again.

21-24 July 2009 Nijmegen and back
Centurion (and Hon Treasurer) Hans Rennie (and
friends from the RAF) walked to Nijmegen, did the 4
days march and then walked home again. An estimated
450 miles in 14 days.
Why? to raise money for Help the Heroes.

So we set off
from RAF Cranwell on Monday 13th July at
8am, to a farewell parade from the Squadrons in
training, we were later meet on route by Air Cadets
from the local area, who kept us well watered and
fed. Lincoln was no trouble, but the closer we got
to RAF Kirton in Linsey, the worse the weather got.
The last 90 minutes was walked in cold rain and we
arrived at 7.20pm. After that the sun shone on us,
until we got to Nijmegen. On Tuesday we set off at
8am and walked to Hull, via Brigg and the Humber
Bridge, arriving at the port at 5.30 pm and caught
the ferry to Eurport.
On Wednesday were
met by my friend, Hans from the local Police Force
as we disembarked. We set off again at 8am, walking
along the banks of the canals and using one ferry
crossing to reach the next ferry crossing, south
east of Dordrecht at 7.15pm where we stopped for the
night. Next morning off at 8.40 am and walked
across country to reach the Rhine and our last ferry
crossing, back on the river banks and along to
Waardenburg finishing at 6pm.
The next day we set off at 8am heading for Nijmegen
along the banks of the Rhine, crossing the Nijmegen
Bridge at 6.45pm and entering Humensord at 7.30pm on
Friday 17th. Then the easy bit, 3 days off,
followed by 4 days of 40 kms at Nijmegen.
On Saturday 25th at 10 am
we set off walking home in the reverse order. Again
the sun shone on us until we got to Lincoln.
Arriving at RAF Cranwell on Wednesday 29th
in cold rain, to guard of honour and then drinks in
Officers mess.
A very different
way to do Nijmegen but one I will not forget. It is
estimated we covered between 450 to 500 miles in 14
days. A great deal of arguing on how long the
wiggly the dykes were.
Donations for
HELP FOR HEROES
will be gratefully accepted. Cheques made out to me,
can be sent to:
Hans Rennie,
Golden Ramblers, Dray Road, Odcombe, BA22 8UL
Nijmegen and back
the easy way.
Centurion Hon Secretary, Chris Flint,
and Assistant Sec. Kathy Crilley travelled to
Nijmegen the easy way - car and ferry. Good weather,
nice picnic stops enroute...... hard slog on the
dykes!
Dutch Centurion
Piet Janssen completed his 44th Nijmegen.
To be followed by
"On 31st August I go to walk the Pennine Way
and further north along Jedburgh and Galashiels
to Glasgow on my section of the Land's End to
John O'Groats Walk". Piet.

From the May edition of Essex Walker:
"EMAILS THE CENTURIONS NETHERLANDS SECRETARY"
I have read in the Essex Walker February 2009, “Writes of Tom
Tidy (C-298)” in which he told about the New Centurions of 1959. He did not
meet at the Nijmegen Marches the last five years C-291 Lieuwe Schol. But I
can tell you that C-291 Lieuwe Schol last year 2008 has walked the Nijmegan
Marches for his 60th time!! Lieuwe has walked also the 30 km distance.
This was also his last attending of the March at Nijmegen. His age now is
84 years and he is living now in a service-flat. C-291 Lieuwe Schol (the
first Dutch Centurion in Britain) is still the Honorary President of the
Centurion Vereniging Nederland.
Please can you send this message to Tom Tidy, because I do
not have an address of him. I have met Tom several times and also in the
100 miles races 1966 and 1968 Leicester to Skegness. Later on I have met
Tom in Nijmegen at the 4-Days Marches.
With best
wishes for all and especially for Tom Tidy.
Piet Jansens (C-389), Secretary Centurion Vereniging Nederland
*****
Congratulations to Centurion OLLY BROWNE who in late March walked
up-and-down Southend Pier (1-and-a-quarter miles each leg) 18 times to
benefit a Stroke Charity. On April 4th Olly, along with STEVE KEMP, were
the only 2 walkers to tackle the Crawley Track 12 hours – and event where
direction changes at 6 hours. Steve was in good form to confidently account
for 54 miles while Olly suffered a painful ankle after 6 hours and dropped
his pace before covering 49 miles. So well done to both for flying the race
walkers flag.

From Dave Ainsworth:
In the Race Walking Record's statistics for
2008, congratulations are due to Centurion KEVIN MARSHALL, who has topped
the 2008 UK walking rankings for athletes covering most distances in walking
races. He's covered 932,962 metres in competition during the
calendar year. Not too far behind is Centurions Secretary CHRIS
FLINT with 893,425 metres behind him in competition. The top 20 contains
many Centurions.
In the Women's top 20, Kathy Crilley is in No.8 position (apparently), and
