Derek Harrison C 466

Derek (Boundary Harriers/Isle of Man) left us on the 16th July 2021 aged 86. He qualified as Centurion 466 in the Ewhurst 100 (1971) clocking 19:34.35.

In total he completed 5 UK sub-24 hours 100 mile races. His fastest time of 17:15:50 was achieved at his third race, the 1976 Woodford Green A.C.24 Hours at Ashtons Track. He set the 25 hour track record and won the race for covering the total distance of 131 miles and 336 yards. At the time of writing Derek still holds Isle of Man track records for his times at 150k, 100 miles and 200k in this race.
Derek completed many ultra-distance races at home and abroad. He set the world 24-hour walking record in 1978 at Rouen, France, where he covered a distance of 219 kms 570 m. In 1974 he represented the Isle of Man in the Commonwealth Games 20 miles race walk held at Christchurch, New Zealand.

Derek inspired other walkers and will be remembered as a legend of Manx athletes.

David Jones C458

Dave completed his first 100 miles at the 1970 Leicester to Skegness in 23:03:25. The race results record him as “Unattached”. When he completed his second Centurion in 1972 it was as a member of Leicester Walking Club. He went on to walk a further 6 Centurions. His best time – 18:45:5 – was achieved in his last race in 1982.
He passed away in January 2021.

Hans Leendertse C427

Hans qualified as Centurion 427 at the 1968 Leicester to Skegness 100 miles race in 23.43.00. He served as chairman for the Centurion Vereniging Nederland (CVN) for many years and will be remembered for his contribution to Dutch Centurions.. Hans sadly passed away aged 92 in March 2021.

 

John Barraclough C382

John sadly passed away on 6th July 2021. A was a member of Yorkshire Walking Club, he took part on the 1966 Leicester to Skegness race and completed 100 miles in the creditable time of 20:22:22.
