Martyn Greaves C 614

Martyn was a member of the Long Distance Walkers Association when he qualified at the 1977 Bristol 100 miles in 22.36.02.

Martin was an active member of the LDWA, ultra-distance running and Park Run scene. He completed 14 LDWA 100 mile and was regarded as a stalwart member of the LDWA. He was a pillar of the West Chiltington community, taking part in worldwide and local running events, always cheerful, offering encouragement and support to fellow participants. In later years he was an enthusiastic participant and supporter of the local 5K Park Run.

Martyn passed away in July 2021.

Graham Peddie MBE C605

A member of Surrey Walking Club, Graham qualified as Centurion 605 at the 1977 Bristol 100 miles in 21.56.47.

Graham not only took part in ultra-distance runs & walks, he dedicated an enormous part of his life providing support for the community & homeless. He was warden of Tanners Hatch Youth Hostel for many years and during his time there gave children their first experience of the outside world. He was awarded the M.B.E in 2002 for his charitable work.

Graham passed away in May 2021. He will be remembered lovingly by Maureen, his wife of 56 years and two sons Kevin and Michael.

DA Wissekerke C 595

At the 2022 AGM Vice-Captain Frans Leijtens C949 reported that not much was known about this Centurion and there were no photos of him. Widderkerke was a member of R.W.V. (Holland).

After the gentleman’s daughter advised the Centurion Vereniging Nederland (C.V.N.) Secretary of his demise in March 2021 Frans made further enquiries but made no progress. What is know is that this gentleman qualified at the 1976 Leicester to Skegness race in 23.06.54.

Peter Goodchild C 471

Peter passed away in September 2021. He took part in many long distance and 50K teams for Surrey Walking Club throughout the 1970s. In 1971 peter qualified as Centurion 471 at the Ewhurst 100 miles in 20.19.37.

Derek Harrison C 466

Derek (Boundary Harriers/Isle of Man) left us on the 16th July 2021 aged 86. He qualified as Centurion 466 in the Ewhurst 100 (1971) clocking 19:34.35.

In total he completed 5 UK sub-24 hours 100 mile races. His fastest time of 17:15:50 was achieved at his third race, the 1976 Woodford Green A.C.24 Hours at Ashtons Track. He set the 25 hour track record and won the race for covering the total distance of 131 miles and 336 yards. At the time of writing Derek still holds Isle of Man track records for his times at 150k, 100 miles and 200k in this race.
Derek completed many ultra-distance races at home and abroad. He set the world 24-hour walking record in 1978 at Rouen, France, where he covered a distance of 219 kms 570 m. In 1974 he represented the Isle of Man in the Commonwealth Games 20 miles race walk held at Christchurch, New Zealand.

Derek inspired other walkers and will be remembered as a legend of Manx athletes.

David Jones C458

Dave completed his first 100 miles at the 1970 Leicester to Skegness in 23:03:25. The race results record him as “Unattached”. When he completed his second Centurion in 1972 it was as a member of Leicester Walking Club. He went on to walk a further 6 Centurions. His best time – 18:45:5 – was achieved in his last race in 1982.
He passed away in January 2021.
