1998 Isle of Man 100

Isle of Man Parish Walk and 100 miles

Promoted by the Manx Harriers

On 20th – 21st June 1998 the Parish Walk was held on the Isle of Man. This is an annual 85 miles walk around the island. For the Dutch walkers it proved to be a large problem just getting there. Because the Brotherhood of Centurions wanted to give the people of the I.O.M. the chance to become Centurions the 85 mile walk was extended to 100 miles. Participants had to walk up and down the boulevard of Douglas for the last 15 miles.

The first 85 miles
Participants started in Douglas and first walked to the south of the island. The target was to touch as many church gates (hence “Parish”) as possible as fast as possible. The walk led along 17 churches all around the island. The finish was in Douglas. 500 people started of on Saturday and only 35 made it to the finish the next day.

The first 3 finishers were:
1    Richard Brown     15.59.44
2    Sandra Brown      16.16.36
3    Arie Boertjes        15.26.22

Doing another 15 miles on top of the first 85 proved to be too much to ask of most walkers. In the end there were only 11 people that finished within 24 hours, of which 4 were Manx walkers qualifying as new Centurions: Ray Hughes, Anthony Kneale, Luc Nique and Simon Cox.

The women’s team won the team prize (Sandra Brown C735, Marleen Radder C783 and Jill Green C898″, the continental” team consisting of Arie Boertjes C942, Luc Nicque and Hans van der Knaap C938 came 2nd. So the ladies received the cup with a tag on it saying “First prize 100 miles men”!

1995 100 miles Battersea Park, London

The race was also the Race Walking Association national championship and the Centurions qualifying event. It was also the 36th Centurion event in which Dutch walkers participated.

The race gave Sandra Brown her 10th 100 miles finish and Maureen Cox became the first female Centurion on the Isle of Man. Unfortunately Dutchman Cees Punselie failed the Centurion title by only 32 seconds

The Sunday Dispatch Trophy, the prize for the open team race, was won by the Rotterdamse Wandelsport Vereniging (R.W.V.). The team consisted of Co de Jong, Joop Wissink and Hans van der Knaap.
The best R.W.A. team, Surrey Walking Club, won the Tom Reynolds Shield. This team consisted of Richard Brown, David Watson and Michael Rowland. The best ladies team also consisted of Surrey Walking Club members: Sandra Brown, Kathy Crilley and Pam Ficken.

The Bill King Memorial Trophy, for the Centurions match between British and Dutch walkers (5 walkers from each country this year), was won by the British. Their 1rst, 3rd, 4th, 6th and 7th place gave them a mere 21 points, where as the Dutch obtained 47 points by claiming 2nd, 5th, 12th, 13th and 15th position.

Dutchman Co de Jong became the first new Centurion and won the Hew Neilson ‘145’ Trophy. His fellow Dutchman Joop Wissink won the Eddy McNeir Trophy, as he was the fastest finisher over 65 years of age.

In the final results John Fenton is listed as reaching the 90 miles point in 21.58.00 and Michael Rowland obtained the same distance in 23.32.02.

1995 100 miles Battersea Park Results

1993 Battersea Park London (200 km/ 24 Hours)

This 200 km / 24 hour race was the first time a 24 hour race had been held in Great Britain other than on the track. The 4 km circuit started and finished at the bandstand for ease of recording as this was essentially a 200 km race. Regrettably for those who decided only to do 100 miles, the race finish was at a lonely caravan more than half a mile away from the main centre of activity.

105 walkers started the race, the second largest number in any British ultra distance race.

58 completed the 24 hours, however the first 3 were not required to be on their feet for the full 24 hours, having already reached 200 km. 25 became new Centurions but only 10 of them continued beyond the 100 mile mark. The first new Centurion and also first at 100 miles and overall winner was Alexsey Radionov, who became only the second Russian walker to join our ranks since George Lind C24 in 1908. His 200 km time of 22 hours 4 minutes 39 seconds was more than 50 minutes better than the runner up, Richard Brown C760. One might have thought that Richard would be the first British walker at 100 miles, but as his target was the full 200 km distance he was beaten to the 100 by just over a minute, by Chris Berwick of Leicester who stopped at the 100 mile mark. The whole event was a tremendous success and thought to be one of the best races ever seen in Great Britain, so much so there have been calls for it to be repeated.
